How AD Web can serve as a Self Service portal for Active Directory Users

AD Web is a premium tool that helps Active Directory administrators to manage their Active Directory domains from anywhere using a web interface. Although it offers many features to administrators it can also be setup to serve as a Self Service portal for normal users.

View/Edit Profile

Normal users can login to AD Web and view or Edit their profile. Users can’t edit their login names such as SAMAccount or UPN but they can edit other fields. However this can be controlled by admin where admin can prevent users from editing their profile.

Password Expiration Notification and Change Password

Users are displayed prominently with the days of their password expiry with a link to change password. Users can click on Change Password and reset a new one in regular way using his old password. This way users won’t be missing their regular password reset routine which avoids password expiration issues.

Password Expiration Reminders

Admin has options to set up password expiration as well expired password reminders that will be sent via email. Users will receive emails regularly based on the number of days and number of times that admin set. This keeps users more attentive to change their passwords in a regular interval without fail. This is a very cool feature which reduces lot of admin/support tasks due to missing password changes by users. More details about this feature can be found at this  blog >>

Forgot Password

Forgot Password is a wonderful feature which allows user to reset their password without knowing their original password. As often user has chances to forget their password, this feature plays a vital role to reduce annoying support works. It works in the similar fashion of how most Forgot Password reset flow works in web. User has to use his username (SAM/UPN) along with his email which will be validated against AD and if all good the user will receive an email link to reset the password. The email link will have an expiration time like 24 hours or 48 hours which can be adjusted from the admin portal based on your preference.

Link AD Web’s Forgot Password module from Other Applications

You may be using other web facing interfaces such RD Web Access, OWA, Citrix StoreFront or any other web applications where you can just add a link and HREF to the AD Web’s forgot password module in a minute. AD Web’s forgot password module is made in that way so user can flexibly reset and redirected back to the original login they are from (Ex: RD Web Access).

These are some features that let your AD Web to utilize as a self-service portal on your environment to reduce lot of administrative tasks.
